Bring me my bow of burning gold
|
|
| Name: | The Oncoming Storm |
| Website: | Planet Minto |
| Location: | Little Delving, The Shire, Middle Earth, United Kingdom |
| Bio: | A fully paid up member of the Awkward Squad, they don't come more awkward than me. I am a man, but consider myself a Feminist. I love my country and its culture, yet am also a Euroophile. I prefer to call myself a Progressive rather than a Liberal. I'm a Trades Unionist, but not a militant. A regular churchgoer ( some have even called me a Christian), but not a fundamentalist. I support the Green Party, not Labour or the Tories, but I am a fully employed blue collar worker in the Transport industry, not some unemployed university dropout who organises riots against the capitalist system that pays their Giro. I want to regulate Capitalism, not abolish it, and I spell 'colour' with a U.
If you cannot deal with any of the above, you probably should not be reading this journal.
A fave quote: "Fairy tales are real; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." -- G.K. Chesterton
I also believe very much in campaigning IRL and on the net, and am involved iin all the following-
http://www.powerswitch.org.uk Fact: official figures say we will start running out of oil in 2037. they may be wrong and it will probably be sooner. what do we do about this? What *can* we do? Go here for answers, and to get involoved.
On LJ, see powerswitch, the online community of this organisation.
http://www.amnesty.org Around the world, many people are being imprisoned and tortured by their own oppressive governments, but Amnesty has won many victories against the oppressors. click for more information
On LJ, see amnestyint for the online Lj community
http://www.makepovertyhistory.org World Poverty. It is not about lack of money, or technology or material resources - it is lack of political will. Will you make the difference?
On LJ, see theonecampaign. This group is US based.
http://www.traidcraft.co.uk
Traidcraft is just one UK based intiative trying to alter the way that world trade keeps the third world poor and western governments rich. go here to learn more.
http://www.fairtradefederation.org This site is the U.S. based equivalent of Traidcraft, with links to Canada and other countries, too.
http://www.maketradefair.com/en/index.htm The way the rules for international trade have been drafted are really biased against poor countries in favour of the richer western nations. if poor farmers could get a decent price for their goods on the world markets, and be allowed to reach places currently denying them access for their produce, we would not need to send them so much foreign aid (and lets be honest, much of this 'aid' from the west is used by power hungry dictators to buy guns). Trade, not aid. Change the rules and change the future for the worlds poorest people.
http://www.foe.co.uk Freinds of Earth is a very local based, hands on, eco-action group. It also has international links. on lj, envrionmental groups include
environment and
sierraclub
http://www.whiteribbon.ca/international In spite of the relative prosperity of North America, Europe and Australasia, problems like domestic violence and sexual abuse still persist, and most of this violence and abuse is directed against women by men. The White Ribbon Campaign is a movement by men challenging other men to take responsibility for ending all forms of violence and abuse. Women are also welcome to join and many have.
On LJ, see _white_ribbons for the on line LJ community that is linked to this group. ________________________________________________________________________________
And what else? Well, I like Monty Python and classic British TV comedies. I am fond of Sci-fi & Fantasy as well. My tastes in music are quite eclectic. I have Glenn Miller, Abba, Bryan Ferry, Mike Oldfield and the Kinks in my music collection, among many others. I enjoy Chess, Hearts, 9 Mens Morris and other games where stategy can beat pure chance and I like writing song parodies. Favourite films include Patch Adams, Good Will Hunting, 12 Angry Men, Jaws, Shirley Valentine, Where Eagles Dare, Casablanca, Air Force One and Life of Brian. Favourite Shakespeare: Julius Ceasar, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Pericles. I enjoy watching 'chickflicks' with my wife and action movies on my own.
